Bourgeois-Gironde Sacha

Sacha Bourgeois-Gironde is professor of behavioral law and economics at University Paris-II Panthéon-Assas and researcher at Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris. His work work roots in the study of cognitive biases and models of limited rationality and has been published in various economic journals (JEBO, Theory and Decision, ...) and general scientific ones (PNAS, Nature Communications, ...). But the main goal of this work is to analyze the relationship between the human mind and the institutional contexts in which choices take place. This has led to more recent forays into the field of behavioral mechanism design (in collaboration with Marcin Czupryna at Krakow Economics University): how institutional design can turn human biases into optimal decisions. This finds direct applications with respect to environmental issues and the analysis of legal frameworks that can guide humans to more sustainable behavior towards their natural environments.

Galvin Ray

Galvin Ray

Ray Galvin has an interdisciplinary background in engineering, social psychology, theology, climate change science, and environmental policy. He was educated at the Universities of Auckland and Otago in New Zealand, and Cambridge and East Anglia in the UK. Currently he does research and teaching for Cambridge University and RWTH-Aachen University, Germany. He is Senior Associate Editor of the journal Energy Research & Social Science, and an Expert Evaluator for European Commission research projects. In recent years he has published extensively on policy, economic and behavioural issues to do with the energy transition toward a low carbon economy. These include: upgrading the energy efficiency of the residential housing stock; energy efficiency in road transport; energy consumption in computer technology and the internet; technical, economic and behavioural issues in renewable energy; energy poverty issues in Europe; and the effects of government fiscal policy on access to energy, especially among low-income households. His work includes investigating rebound effects in energy efficiency, and together with a Cambridge colleague he introduced the notion of “prebound effects.” Dr Galvin uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods, ranging from small-sample semi-structured interviews to large database analysis. He also brings a critical approach, from the philosophy of science, to research in energy and economic issues. His most cited publications include an early critique of Germany’s policy on energy efficiency upgrades of existing homes; a mathematical guide for estimating “how many interviews are enough” in qualitative research; and an analysis of the US “Green New Deal” policy proposal. Recently he has extended his research and publications to explore how fiscal policy could be better used to enable poorer households to access low carbon energy services, and to bring about a more even distribution of political power in developing the energy transition. Since 2004 I've been working at the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, currently as a professor. My main research interests include macroeconomics, institutional economics, ordoliberalism and economic order theory as well as studies of the German economy. My dissertation (2004) dealt with the problem of flexible forms of employment in the Federal Republic of Germany, their regulation, socio-economic effects and evolution. I devoted my habilitation (2017) to the institutional aspects of the German labor market as a sub-system of the economic order of the Social Market Economy. Using the analytical model I developed, I assessed the evolution of the German economic model through the prism of the labor market. I led a three-year transnational project (2019-2021) to test and transfer selected institutions of the German labor market under Polish conditions. The project was concerned with supporting young people – students of vocational schools – in entering the labor market and helping unemployed graduates of these schools, as well as inter-institutional cooperation between district labor offices and vocational schools. I am active in the Polish Economic Society, Toruń Branch and the Forum of Institutional Thought.
